Can a root canal be done in one session?

Yes, in many cases this filling (or root canal treatment) can be done in just one session; some doctors even consider this to be the norm.

For front teeth, it is very easy to do root canal treatment in one session, starting from removing the decay and exposing the nerve, and ending with placing the filling inside the roots.

As for the back teeth, the situation here varies according to many factors, the most important of which are: the anatomical shape of the roots, the size of the nerve canals, the doctor’s time, and other factors.

In any case, if the necessary conditions are available, root canal treatment can actually be started and finished in the same session, which is what we strive to do as much as possible at Smile Art Center.

But if the appropriate conditions are not available, how many root canal sessions are needed? Here, the number of sessions varies from one tooth to another, as a tooth may need two or three sessions.

Root canal filling steps in one session

There is no significant difference between the steps of root canal treatment in one session or in several sessions. Below we explain the most important of these steps.

Diagnosis

It is not normal to start root canal treatment with a simple complaint; rather, a thorough examination is required to reach the correct diagnosis.

In this step we rely on the patient’s complaint, the vitality of the tooth, x-rays, and some other factors.

Caries removal

After we confirm that this tooth needs root canal treatment, we first remove the decay that caused the nerve inflammation.

In some cases, there is no tooth decay, but there may be a fracture or a problem with the periodontal system, and we take all of this into account during the diagnosis.

Age assessment

After we make sure that all the decay that was present in the tooth has been removed, we evaluate its condition well to determine whether it is suitable for a filling or not.

nerve detection

After we remove all the decay and evaluate the tooth and make sure it is suitable for root canal treatment, we remove part of the dentin layer to expose the openings of the nerve canals that we want to treat.

nerve removal

After we are able to clearly detect the openings of the nerve canals, we use specific devices to determine the length of the roots and then work to remove the inflamed nerve or its remnants.

Cleaning and widening channels

Here we use certain tools combined with some liquids to clean the roots well from all the nerve remains.

Next, we expand these canals well and sufficiently to ensure that there are no nerve remnants, in addition to leaving enough space for the filling material that will be placed in these canals.

nerve filling

It is the last step in root canal treatment, in which a specific material is used that the body accepts and does not reject.
